Synopsis

Recent changes in the user community have seen a shift from proprietary software to open source software. This is especially true for some Asian government departments. When a user decides to make that shift, what are the factors to consider besides cost saving? Is technical support an important factor? What about the functionalities of the software? This talk will focus on the comparisons between open source tools and proprietary tools using a case scenario of choosing suitable software tools for digital image processing. The speaker will also share with the audience his research experiences in using digital image processing tools.

Biodata of Speaker

Digital image processing has been one of the major research interests of Dr Woo for the past ten years. Among the many related aspects of image processing that he studied include biomedical imaging, data visualization, and image security. He has used proprietary tools such as Matlab and Photoshop in addition to open source tools in his research.
