In 1997, as a step towards the development of the IT field in the country, the Malaysian National Computer Confederation or MNCC initiated two awards, namely the Excellent IT Teacher and Excellent IT Student Award. The awards were designated as the MNCC Excellent ICT Teacher and Excellent ICT Student Awards from 2002 onwards.
For the year 1999 onwards, the event was supported by the Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia (MECM) and MAXIS Communications Berhad. Each year, the awards were made more attractive by the increase in the prize money as well as the high profile of the event.
From the year 2003 onwards, the 3 parties MECM, MNCC and MAXIS successfully expanded the scope of the awards by adding to the number of categories as well as increasing the prize money awarded to the Excellent ICT Teacher and Excellent ICT Student.
For this year, there will be 4 parties, that is, the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications (MEWC), the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), MNCC and MAXIS and all have decided to present awards to 6 categories as was done in the last 2 years. The following are the categories to be contested this year and the prize monies offered :
As was done last year, there will be only one prize for each category so that each winner could be regarded as the best in each category. Also, for schools, the competition now emphasizes website development in relation to a community project carried out by the school.
The closing date for the ICT Excellence Awards have been fixed on 5 August 2005. The Awards Committee is in the process of forming the various panel of judges so that they could start working immediately after the closing date. The awards will then be presented at the start of the ICT Month 2005, which is expected to be on 6 September 2005.
