Re: [ossig] (Fwd) STI News: Firm discovers good IT help hard to find

A perversion of truth should be returned with a "personal attack". Well,
since he wants to be "honest" with us, then I will be "honest" with him.
That is just my view of his kind of people, after he got a chance to
generalise on IT graduates in Malaysia. Anyway, what I was merely suggesting
is that
1. He is working with Genting
2. He is commenting on IT professionals in Malaysia
IMPLYING that he knows the big slice of IT professionals' distribution and
skills.

Let me comment on the contest itself. It you were to go to the website at
http://www.egenting.com.my/rnd/ , you will have the impression that it is
all about data structure. That is why half the people who went there bring
books solely on data structure. Don't look at me now, somehow I got my hands
on an ancient "Data Structures in Java" book ;)

What is worse, there is no clear indication on how exactly the competition
is going to be like i.e. objective questions (ok, sounds far-fetched, but
that IS a possibility right?), debugging or just constructing systems. Heck,
I even saw a person bringing an English Dictionary along.

If they ask us to write complex systems, and do not provide us with the
necessary reference information such as UNIX programmer's manual or Java API
reference, how are we to recall all those function calls?

Back to my view of the competition.

It is really a good thing. There should be more of it. I heard most of the
interviews in India requires you to debug or in some way show your technical
skills in a real-world situation. Yup mel, you are doing a very good job at
filtering out incompetent programmers (I have been to your site).

Perhaps I did not have a chance to explain that the contestants are not
given enough preparation, so one cannot really blame them for not doing
well.

Just my 2 cents' worth.
