That also depends on which windows env/manager you use. I uses AfterSTEP and Blackbox for the last two years and they are pretty fast. Comparing X to say windows or Aqua is a little unfair since X is a lot more robust than both. You windows can't allow you to have multiple windowing environment. It doesn't allow you to display output remotely across the network. In my opinion, for desktop, X can be a little overkill in most cases but the alternative would means fragmentation of X (besides, there are almost no alternatives). X was designed to be a network centric display environment, and will always be so.
