Re: [ossig] RE: Problem running KDE
I have one workstation with similar configuration. Epox K6-II-500 256MB
ram TNT2 graphic card. I did however, run Mandrake 9.0 on it. It has
been up and running for a few weeks and has no noticeable problem.
Mandrake 9.0 is using 2.4.19 which I believe RH 8 is using also.
What you might want to check it out is look at the log file and see
what causes KDE to hang.

Folks,
I've been having this problem running KDE on my AMD K6-2 500 with 3D
Now.
It used to hang when I launched KDE under Red Hat 7.2 and also now
under Red
Hat 8.0. Gnome was OK under 7.2 and I've still got to see if Gnome
runs on
my PC under 8.0 which I'm in the process of re-installing right now.
However, I prefer KDE to Gnome and if I can get it to run on my PC, I
can
begin moving away from Windows for everything I want to do including
downloading and managing my digital pictures.
I have a PC partner motherboard with 64MB onboard RAM but increasing
it even
to 176 MB had no effect on KDE hanging up.
I have an MSI Riva TNT 2 AGP display card 3D Magic Series (MS-8808
TMT-2 M64
3D with 32MB SDRAM) and I could replace it with a S3 Trio 64 PCI card
and
see what happens and in the worst case scenario, replace the
motherboard
with an ASUS (per Brian Bork's advice).
What other makes of motherboards work will with Linux??
Would it make sense to also replace my AMD processor with a Pentium
III or
Celeron processor?
Do today's integrated motherboards (ie. with display, soundcard and
other
peripheral controllers integrated onbaord) work well with Linux or
should I
go for a more discreet setup?
BTW. Thanks Colin Charles for your advice on workstation install.
However
I'd like to get my hands on the third CD to have the freedom to choose
packages. For instance I wanted to install UK English and asked for the
third CD.
Thanks and Regards
Charles
