Asian tech sector set for 2003 boom

Research firm International Data Corp (IDC) sees strong growth for the Asia-Pacific IT
and telecommunications segments in 2003, this despite the current economic malaise
and the threat of war in the Middle East.
Driven largely by infrastructure upgrades, the regional IT market, excluding Japan, will grow by
11 percent to US$81 billion this year, said Piyush Singh, IDC Asia-Pacific’s managing director.
According to the market research firm,
hardware markets such as PCs (personal
computers), low- to mid-range servers and
LAN (Local Area Network) hardware are set to
bounce back after a fledgling performance in
2002.
The company also pointed to converged
handheld devices, networked attached
storage, digital imaging and printing, and
wireless LANs as particular bright spots this
year.
On the software and services front, IDC
believes the focus will be on smaller projects and modular implementations. The company said
Indian services giants like Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys could emerge as key global
players in light of the current cost-cutting wave.
In addition, IDC expects Linux adoption to increase in Asia-Pacific and Linux clusters to
become a credible contender to Unix in the high-performance computing space.
The optimism further extends to the regional telecommunications market.
“The telecommunications
services industry will continue
its growth momentum driven by
deregulation and pent-up
demand in the developing
countries,” said Singh. “This
market will also grow by 11
percent over the prior year to
US$137 billion.”
He added VoIP (Voice over
Internet Protocol) services will
gain momentum and become a
viable consideration among
businesses, while the current
broadband proliferation will
continue as a result of lowered
prices, competition and the
online gaming boom.
