[ossig] RE: Problem running KDE - switch distro or switch to FreeBSD

Charles,

Your hardware is totally compatible. I know this because I have used used such a setup before. I think it might actually be your distro's problem. Have you tried another distro? (why is this is? because the packages they have are precompiled with certain assumptions and there may be unknown interactions at some level).

My suggestion is, try
Red Hat
Mandrake
Slackware

See if you get the same problem. Otherwise, try removing all kde rpms (or packages) and download and compile the kde tarballs. That is, if you can't live without linux...personally, I would recommend FreeBSD! :-)

Yes, largely thanks to Dinesh & Co's 'evangalising', I went back to trying FreeBSD. Have been using it (4.7) successfully for over 3 months at work and at home. It rocks. One place, one OS. Unbelievably simple administration.

And no more 'incompatible-docs-due-to-different-policy-of-distros' problems when it comes to 3rd party software. (eg. FS structure? config files?). Linux...sux (comparatively, anyway). I never _ever_ thought I'd say something like that! But a lot of the distro incompatibility problems result in books being inaccurate, installation and admin of software becomes problematic and your system becomes a right mess. This is even more so if you do development and use many different types of software (and update frequently).

Regards,
Mukhsein Johari
