Re: [ossig] IDC: Windows cheaper than Linux

i didn't read the new article myself, but from what colins has quoted...

"We believe these higher costs are...related to the relative immaturity of the management tools available today for Linux systems," IDC said.
that's pretty amusing... i see no reason why we should blame it on the interface itself. i guess (since i'm not IDC <smile>) the higher cost is mainly due to the fact that one need to pay more for linux admins.

a good admin automate their routine jobs, and anything that can possibly be automated. GUI probably won't be very useful, while it would be more convenient to have a one-liner at the shell invoking pre-written script for specific job, e.g. adding a user, etc. monitoring is probably done by a daemon that generates summary report at regular interval and when requested.

i've not been an admin myself, but i understand that true unix people are all damn lazy. if GUI tools are of much use, i meant if it actually save them a lot of work, they would have written tons of them many years ago...

one of the way to bring down the cost is to have GUI management tools that enables an average joe to do the admin job, average joe gets average pay. that's fair enough. but honestly, are you sure that you're gonna hire someone who doesn't really know what's going on in the system?

btw, many of the management tools we have on linux are of UNIX origin, that's more than 30 years of history man. what's immaturity?
