Re: [ossig] All Talk, No Action
Hi all,
The Open Source is a humble thing. It is more like All Talk, Silent
Action at this moment. Wait a while and see, it is soon to be different.
I got a few customers used Linux in production and get us to maintain
it. I won't quote their name, but their industry: Transportation,
School, Financial, and many many Small Businesses.
I also heard Linux is popular in Oracle world where those giant
companies are switching to Linux for being "low cost" and "reliable" as
good as the Solaris counterpart. In fact, Oracle is really pushing a
lot of deployment on Linux.
Another great thing I ever seen: CheckPoint NG installation CD come
with Linux as the default OS where you can boot it up, and get the
Firewall installed on it! So no need to install your own Linux, harden
it, and install CheckPoint. It is like all done for you. You won't see
this possible for Windows OS especially when the installation CD is
given up free (buy license code later, of course) Please don't flame
CheckPoint... I only use this as example to show that commercial
companies do use Open Source product to build their solutions and make
it easy for users.
Oh, talk about Appliance. One day I evaluated EDSL hardware from Korea
and it is like a Router. Inside has the OS and the developer told me it
is a scale down Linux OS... no wonder I found it so familiar... (uname
-a, ps ax, etc...) So embedded Linux is silently survived in the
market...
Silent Action, Talk Later.
