Subject: [ossig] Bahasa Melayu word list released.

The Open Source Group of MIMOS is happy to
release version 1.0 of the Bahasa Melayu
(Bahasa Malaysia, Malay language, ms_MY)  wordlist.

To our knowledge, this is the first non-proprietary BM wordlist
to be released.   It has approx 14,400 words.

It's Copyright ©2003 MIMOS Berhad, but it is released under
2 open content licenses, allowing it to be widely used without
any licensing cost.

You can download it here:

http://www.asiaosc.org/uploads/20030620_1/bahasa_melayu_wordlist_v1_0.zip

Or you can get (or help to enhance) the 'wiki' version here:

http://www.asiaosc.org/enwiki/page/Bahasa_Melayu_word_list.html

It is dual licensed under the OpenOffice PDL and the GFDL.  It
cannot currently be plugged into OpenOffice as a spellchecker,
but that feature will be added during Q3/2003.

In essence, the licensing means:

1) you can use the word list for whatever you want (e.g. in
open source or proprietary software, for research, etc.)
2) if you enhance the word list, you must release the enhancements
under the same license, and credit MIMOS as the original authors.

We have a method of being able to analyze future words lists to
see if they were based on this word list and were not released,
or did not credit MIMOS.

Of course, this word list was not based on any existing proprietary
word list.  To be able to release it as an open document,
we had to create it from scratch. The full methodology to create
the word list can be found at:
http://www.asiaosc.org/enwiki/page/Bahasa_Melayu_word_list_generation_methodology.html

We are not linguists nor did we hire linguists to produce this
list.  There are probably errors, and definitely omissions.
Nevertheless, we believe it will be of benefit to the future of
BM and software in Malaysia.
