Re: [ossig] ADSL Streamxy M'sia
If you haven't got it running yet (I think you do after the first
advice), use Roaring Penguin:
http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/
It's really nice and works on the spot (except you have a newer RedHat
version, which comes with a heavily butchered version of the rp:
http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/#prob
).
I ran into big trouble with it myself on RedHat; downgraded to the
original, official version from RP, but with the next update of RHN it
reverted to the 'newer', the butchered version. Which finally froze my
feelings for RedHat well below zero.
Here is the 'trick'; only for those interested: The original version
from Roaring Penguin (RP) is 3.5-1; from some release (8 or 9) onwards,
RedHat calls *its* version 3.5-2, which will forcibly overwrite RP's
original 3.5-1; except you enter it as 'skip' in the update agent
settings.
This is another step towards Micro$oftisation. It would make a lot of
sense - they came up with a fully kernel-based PPPoE - to find a *new*
name for their program. Instead, they drive it down our throats if we
like it or not.
Here while upgrading from 7.2 to 9, it simply overwrote my settings and
removed any control over it; forcibly starting ADSL with boot. Without
any chance to 'stop' the link. Take care everyone who doesn't sit on
flat rate !!
rpm didn't permit to downgrade without tricks ('older version ...') and
once I had it thrown out, and RP's original version back and running,
the next up2date re-installed the non-working butchered version.
End of the story, end of my relationship with RedHat. I formatted the hd
and installed OpenBSD. Which has a broken userland ppp, b.t.w. But at
least with workarounds and under my control.
