Aside from a great tool for "market research" types, this seems like a
fascinating project... although close enough to 19th-century
ethnography that I imagine you in one of those cool handlebar
moustaches poring over a collection of skulls in phrenological
rhapsody...

<ahem>

What immediately sprang to mind was WIKI! It seems like you're going
to have to rely on a community of specialists like
dictionary/encyclopedia editors have; and from what I understand Wiki
is an ideal format for that kind of consensual collaboration... have a
look at http://wiki.org/wiki.cgi?WhatIsWiki or the FREE-TIME-DEVOURING
http://www.wikipedia.org if somehow you've managed never to encounter
one before ;)
