Re: [ossig] Informal poll - what open source do you want at FOSSCONexhibition?

If you can't afford the conference, just come along to the
exhibition (free entry), bring blank CD's, and we'll duplicate
for you.

Those who pay for the conference will get some free things
when they arrive, I can't give any details, sorry :)

Since the conference is quite pricey for the budget conscious students, maybe you guys can offer them the CDs free when they register for the conference.

I'm trying to ensure that there is a very large
amount of open source CD's available at FOSSCON2003
exhibition, so even those who cannot afford to attend
the conference can come along and buy some open source
CD's for very low price (or bring blank CD's and we
will exchange them for full CD's!)
that is really much appreciated effort. wished i had similar
opportunity years ago when i first started playing with linux :)

I want to mainly concentrate on the big stuff, that
people could not download without broadband.
yup. when we all have affordable broadband, perhaps this is not a
problem then.
speaking of broadband, what if people here who has
broader-than-128k-band connection team up and continue in similar
service country wide? when this works, we can set up representatives
volunteer all over Malaysia that has the full collection of CDs ready
to be -redistributed- to people who needs it.
perhaps we can start up newer projects with new ideas.

Can I get some quick feedback, at the following
prices, *which packages would you buy?*, so I can
make sure we duplicate enough for the day, but not
so much that there are 100's or 1000's extra
unsold discs that will soon go 'stale' as new versions
come out.
naw, just have more events quick, then send them off :) you can always
make talks from Unis to Colleges to Schools and give them away, right?
:D

*brainwash* the kids before they got brainwash by M$ :D

And, if you wouldn't buy at these prices, would
you buy at lower prices?
of course :)

RM 3 - OpenOffice.org 1.1 RC binary+source
[snipped]

RM21 - Debian 3.0_r1 Binary, 7 discs
RM14 - Debian 3.0_r1 Source, 7 discs
do offer Debian with only 1st CD, some might only need one to start,
then apt-get everything else. :)

RM 6 - FreeBSD 4.8, 2 discs
[snipped]

RM 3 - OpenBSD 3.3 (unofficial ISO)
the price looks good to me. perhaps make packages or offer packs to
attract them to buy will further promote :) like
Debian+Oo+Opengroupware<grin> for 17.99RM :>

What else? Must be in an easy ISO format, and pref
just 1 or 2 CD's, and likely to be bought by
several people. Somebody mentioned Cygwin, but it's not
easy to install via CD. Any interest in Slackware,
Lycoris? I see this as a big opportunity to help
spread OSS CD's into every corner of Malaysia, so if
you buy some, please duplicate a copy for all your
techie friends!
with the suggestion above, perhaps with little organization,
distribution and redistribution will be more effective. if this idea is
ok, i can get a website up and ready to make some origanizational
stuffs on this project.

[snipped]

programme for longer, so there is some incentive
on me to make a small profit from this. It turns out
that turning the send-CD programme into C-O-D is
going to be quite a pain (ask me if you care for
details).
please do make a little profit, which will sustain your good effort. i
once got RH and mandrake CDs myself, and posted in j.pcbase/j.o.l and i
have pretty good response at rm5 last time. i remember i even got
offered more than RM5 being appreciated taking the trouble driving from
Klang to PJ to deliver the CD... those were the days :)

anyway, keep it up guys :)

SianLun Lau
