What is ppp connected  to - a  modem, an IP address  (for vpn), a  USB
connection, etc.?      Do  you have   pppd   listening   for  incoming
connections,  or is this  an already-running ppp  process that got put
into promiscuous mode.

What it *looks* like is that ppp spawned a login process, which failed
authentication  (pap?  chap?).  Doesn't look   like  anything to worry
about, but depending  on your paranoia you   might wanna take  further
investigative action...
