Re: [ossig] Great Ball interview ... should be in our OSS 'war chest'

with closed source, middlemen have margins to make their money. with open
source, they can't. period. the root cause of this is the corruption
within our procurement systems.
This is something I was trying to get to yesterday but the Q&A session was too short. For an application such as ERP software, a major portion of this deal would be the software cost. If a vendor build their application on postgresql/php/python/java etc, wouldn't he be able to charge more? since he would be the one who help rolling out not only the application he wrote but also intergrating a suite of backend and middleware ? If he go for a propreitery model, it would cost more and ultimately, less people would buy, because of the high cost. Let's say you have a whole project that cost 120K or so, probably around 50-80K would be spent on SQL server, middleware and application server, if you go with OSS, you can charge probably around 40K for the portion of application you wrote, or if you like charge lower than that and have more customer for your product.

mysql/postgresql? PHP? While not as rare as say, 5 years ago, it's not
exactly a-dime-a-dozen, is it?
but then you don't need masses of them either, just a few good ones.

I suppose it all boils down to how things are done here. It is virtually
unheard of for small/unknown/unconnected businesses get awarded
important/expensive projects. Even in projects that do not require a
i think we need to ask why this is so, and agitate to make this change. a
major problem in procurement is still the fact that relationships and
corrupt practices rules over merit and deliverables any day. that is the
crux of the problem, and election after election, the voting public still
does not make any change or even send a message.
