Re: [ossig] Govt ICT infrastructure

I have forwarded that very good question to the head
of iVest development.

Unfortunately iVEST is a business unit which
(it seems to me), like much of the rest of
corporate Malaysia, is not yet totally convinced about
the business case for developing in an open source manner.

Constant pressure and awareness is the only solution
I can see.

Hmm...so why won't MIMOS publish specs for the ivest
smart card reader and card (which go into MyKad and
such)? I asked them for it and the person who
responded was very evasive about it and then just
stopped. I explained that I wanted to write drivers
for open source OSes and (plugins for open source
programs to use the PKI) they simply said "we'll be
releasing a linux version soon" Hmph. What use are
binaries?!? Will it work for all linux distros? What
about BSDs? What if I wanted to write software for
embedded devices? (sigh)

Support for FOSS in gov and gov-related orgs is simply
at the lip-service level as far as I'm concerned.
