Yeah, my company actually had a policy forbidding photo ID cum gate card to be 
used for this purpose. As are result we issued a second photo ID for drivers 
and sales staff just to leave it in those desk.  I sometimes wonder what 
would be the point of leaving an ID pass at the information desk, especially 
in some  buildings, it was more of a formality than actual doing any real 
security, except Govt offices in Putrajaya. If I want to hide my identify to 
enter a building, I will pickup one of those ah-long card arrive at my 
doorstep each day.
