I don't think it is an NFS problem, I've done transfers of 1GB+ before without problems.
I'm sure others have done even bigger files. 

If the files are 2Gb or 4Gb or bigger then the issue could be a "largest file supported" issue but at 650MB, thats way too small to be the cause.

If all else fails go back to good ol FTP :)
