oh boy, this made it to ossig. lots of lecturer bashing, which i think
is inappropriate for the list (hence i responded to CS, an old friend,
via e-mail).

gist of my response (in case anyone cares):

* Charles Greif is someone I've shared a beer or two with, so my
comments may be biased. A man whose knowledge varies from Operating
Systems to Data Communications & Networks, to Unix Tools and
Microprocessor implementation.

* Pushing Linux in education as Monash does is nice, but its also wrong.
Students don't get past the fact that they're not learning "real
world(tm) tools", and want to do .NET stuff, et al. Two sides of the
coin really. And please, don't flame, I myself am a Linux thoroughbred.

* CS probably didn't know how to use the Mac OS hence getting files
seemed difficult. Also note that WINE, CodeWeavers CrossOver and
TransGaming's WineX are all alternatives to get games going under Linux,
so no, we don't need XP no more.

* Remaining names are all lecturers at Monash - some at Clayton, some at
Malaysia. Kar Seng is a personality on our local mailing lists (myoss at
least).

* Connections (in malaysia) as Dinesh said, will help (i.e. make use of
cronyism or nepotism!).

* Shafted (LAN Games - www.shafted.com.au) doesn't run in Malaysia, and
there's no equivalent to the best of my knowledge. Shafted started as a
bunch of LAN games for several home users (now the admins), and now has
grown so large, that during Big Day In events, they get up to a 1,000
participants (gamers, leechers, et al).
