We (MIMOS) ran a OSS technical workshop the other day where this was
discussed, ClamAV was recommended.  See the slides:

Apparently its signature are not as complete as proprietary software,
but it does cover all the main viruses seen 'in the wild' (I believe
most of the world's viruses detected by Norton etc have never been
released into the wild).
