[ossig] Has anyone tried Linux + opteron locally?

Somebody internal wants to know if anybody local had experience
of Linux on AMD Opteron.

If so, do tell us, so we can all go green with envy :)

Personally I quite like the look of the first entry on
http://www.tyan.com.tw/products/html/matrix.html ...
2xOpteron, 8xDDR slot and 8xAGP, gigabit lan, firewire ...

It seems like the open source-OS support for AMD64 is
flooding out, latest is Mandrake 9.2 betas. I think the
Windows support got pushed back into H2/2004, right? So if that doesn't kill Opteron, it might kill MS in the server room.

Although from the latest netcraft stats, MS has definitely lost
the war of the webserver...

I even wonder if Apache is getting to the dangerous 'monoculture'
level where it's better for all of us if people start to build alternatives,
so one big Apache vulnerability can't enable a single worm to turn
off the web.
