Re: [ossig] Need to know where to get RedHat legal copy in Kl.
Hi there,
My company is selling official Red Hat Enterprise Linux products,
directly from Red Hat Inc. Here is the price list:
1. RHEL WS 3 Standard (x86), RM1,250
2. RHEL ES 3 Standard (x86), RM3,270
3. RHEL AS 3 Standard (x86), RM6,150
4. RHEL AS 3 Premium (x86), RM10,250
Older version is still available, and the price is the same as above
except the version is 2.1. All "Standard" edition come with box pack, CD
and Manuals. The web site sell "Basic" edition. It means no CD and
Manuals. Only download. Well, you can buy "Media Kit" locally (for x86
only), it is available separately for RM199.
I believe there are some doubts people have about Red Hat products and
how its licensing goes. Here is it:
1. Basically Red Hat sell you "entitlement". They are not selling you
software license. Entitlement is for the "supports".
2. You buy any products above will entitle you for software support and
upgrades from Red Hat Inc for the box that you install the RHEL. They
have toll free number to call should you need helps. The premium
additional comes with 1 hour response and 24x7 RHN & Phone support.
Others are next business day support with 9x5.
3. Each entitlement valid for 12 months. When it is expired, no new
updates from RHN. You need to buy the entitlement again to get
continuous download of updaters. However, you can choose not to buy it
and wait for some times later, then buy again.
4. There may be discount (not sure valid for Malaysia or not...) for
buying new entitlement for the existing customers. It is case-by-case,
as mentioned in their web site.
5. If you distribute the RHEL CDs, it is useless as the basic
distribution give you basic OS without any latest updates that have
fixed the security problems and performance improvement. Well, if you
have good engineers doing the updates, by all mean, you can do it
yourself because source code is available for all RHEL products. Why do
double work while Red Hat is doing it professionally?
Red Hat is for Enterprise Unix market. Fedora is for the traditional Red
Hat Linux users. There are Red Hat engineers actively throwing goodies
into Fedora. You will learn good stuffs there as well.
If you have more questions, you can email me. I think we can also talk
about it here in the list.
Thanks.
