RE: [ossig] Apache2 Newb Q

In that case, you don’t usually do that. The reason to run a DNS server is for you to have a record for your domain name pointing to some IPs, and the MX record, SOA record, so and so. If in any case, you have your own domain name and you do not have your own DNS server, you need to either have the domain name DNS hosted with a hosting company or get a free DNS hosting. ISP such as Jaring or TMnet don’t provide this sort of DNS service to dialup or DSL customers, unless you are one of their hosting customers, then that is a different case.

In that above scenario, if you want to have a hosting company to handle your DNS requests for you, you just have to point the name server records to their DNS server names or IP addresses, and let them configure for you. Otherwise, you can always sign up with one of those DNS provider such as ZoneEdit, UltraDNS, or even use those dynamic DNS services such as no-ip.com, dyndns.org etc. There are many providers out there, and you can customize the DNS records to your own requirements.

You do not host any server info except the IP addresses or MX records. Other than that, nothing much is required to be done to run your own DNS server.

Running a caching name server is different. It speeds up domain name resolving for your own local LAN. All the machines in your local LAN just have to point its DNS server to your own local caching server, and that will do the job.

Cheers

Yalor... Just in case you don't have any DNS server, you had to borrow ISP DNS server to host your server info.

You don't need to register with the ISP

If you do run your own DNS server, just setup a MX record accordingly, and
you'll get your mails.

phpBB is a bulleting board software on the php platform.

BTW, do you guys have any suggestions on setting up a mail-server?
phpbb keeps bugging me for one. How would the mail-server work? Please
briefly walk me through the steps required. (Btw, running WinXP Pro
here).

Sorry. May I know what is phpbb? I just cant guess what is it.  :p
And, the mail server, let say you know how to setup your mail server
with your lovely WinXP with installing Exchange server (beware with
those worms and viruses), then you need to register with ISP to add a
entry in DNS to route the mail to your server.
