Having used Minix on my first PC, 8MHz with 512kb of RAM,
it was way ahead of its time.  Maybe it just didn't grow as fast
(probably down to the collaboration model rather than the technical
design itself).  It didn't have nice values or virtual memory when I was 
using it,
for example.  So maybe Linux did start off "broken" compared to Minix,
but Linus was better at getting 1000's of people to work together.
