The Little Engine That Could
How Linux is Inadvertently Poised to Remake the
Telephone and Internet Markets
-----------
This was something iirc we talked about some time
back. Probably the last stone in the dam (holding the
floodwaters) would be the wide availability of mobile
ip(v6?)-phones. When they start mass-producing it in
China...
Notice how mobile mp3 players have practically killed
the mobile walkman and discman. Will ip-phones kill
landline and cellphones? How long will it take?
The repercussions are huge, to say the least.
Communities can setup their own links without waiting
for telcos. Just buy the equipment. What about between
communities? Well, the cantenna and usb+chinese
cooking utensil transceiver would do the job. 3.5km is
not a problem, apparently. (http://www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/)
