Devils advocate - because there's a steeper learning
curve, meaning more people give up and go the VB route,
so maybe good Unix programmers are more intelligent :) and
you are paying for that?

Theory 2)

If there's less demand for something, it's more of a risk to
go into that field, and based on stockmarket principles, those 
taking more risk demand a risk premium.   That's one reason why
stocks pay more than bonds, in the long term.

Back to the skills vs prices thing, I was part of a similar
situation in the UK in 1995-1998 - Oracle was 60%
of the database market, Sybase was 15%.  I chose Sybase,
because it paid 30% more.  Now Sybase is dead(ish) and
Oracle lives.  I took the risk, earned my risk premium, and 
the higher risk was borne out in practise.
