Theory refinement: Not only do the less competent end up going the VB
route, it takes a greater amount of time to train someone to do things
_right_ than it does to teach them to point and click on pretty GUIs.
Unix/Linux systems are less tolerant of point-and-clickers and more
demanding that things be done right.
As a result, the longer training time translates into greater barriers
to entry and anytime there are greater barriers to entry, it's more
expensive. Not everyone is willing or able to invest the time it takes
to become minimally competent on a Unix/Linux system.
Other areas where more demanding learning curves/standards have resulted
in more expensive staff, despite being in the same field: CPAs vs
standard accountants, Doctors vs. nurses, lawyers that have passed the
bar vs paralegals.
