[ossig] Strange behaviour with server...

Dear all,

I have recently deployed a dell 1 U poweredge server using debian as
theOS. Due to the reason that debian 3.0 rc2 does not contain the
gigabit NIC and raid controller I had to recompile the kernel which is a
2.4.26 kernel to get it working.

After testing the system and satisfied with it, I went to the data
center, unplugged the other server with was working perfect and plugged
it into the gigabit NIC. Next, I booted up the server and the network
came up but could not contact the gateway. Then, i flushed the firewall
and did a tcpdump. I got a lot of internal network traffic, but still
could not contact the GW. When all else failed, I rebooted and behold
this time it was able to contact the GW. Rebooted again, I had the same
problems as the first time. Rebooted again, the GW was contactable. I
went on rebooting the server several times and I was only able to
contact the GW every other reboot. Hence, if i reboot 10 times i would
fail to contact the GW half the time. Anybody knows how to fix this
twilight zone phenomena?
