Re: [ossig] Open Source as a Weapon
Kinda strange war
Most wars the bystanders get hurt - collateral damage
This war the bystanders benefit....so far anyway....then...
Taking this to one limit -
Say Microsoft says, "ok we have 50 odd billion in the bank
we give everything we have today to the open source community"
(with a BSD type licence so they can reel it back in later)
in an attempt to make most other solutions irrelevant
knowing they have enough money to ride out these few years
They may well succeed in killing off a few competitors
unlikely :)
anyway, heard a rumour that M$ is working on a "Windows" similar in
concept to Apple's Mac OS X
Take an OSS platform and built a product around it, look and feel like
Windows, Unix underneath with Windows APIs (like Wine) so Win proggies
can still run
Someone suggested this sometime back when Mac OS X was younger...not
too far fetched
