Just the Linux facts, from IBM and Novell
PETALING JAYA: Novell Inc and IBM Corp have joined forces to hold
technical workshops aimed at IT professionals in Malaysia and Singapore.
The workshops offer introductory technical training that would provide
the basic knowledge necessary to investigate the business and enterprise
applicability of Linux, Novell said in a statement.
"CIOs are constantly bombarded with information about Linux by their
peers and suppliers, but the majority of this information is based on
perception, not fact," said David Lenz, director of sales and marketing
at Novell Asia Pacific.
"Novell and IBM have a shared vision around Linux and are committed to
helping CIOs understand the strategic advantages of deploying Linux
within their organisations," he added.
The use of Linux is spreading throughout the business world at
unprecedented rates, IBM said.
"In all industries, including telecommunications, petroleum, geophysical
sciences, financial services, government, automotive, computer-aided
engineering and design -- the economics of Linux are simply
overwhelming," said Lisa Looi, Linux sales manager at IBM Asean/ South
Asia (www.ibm.com/linux).
"We see our customers embracing Linux as never before because of the
freedom it gives them to choose their architecture based on the needs of
the application, rather than being tied to a single platform," she added.
Novell and IBM designed the workshop in partnership to help give IT
professionals the facts on Linux and offer a risk-free solution in
establishing whether Linux can be part of their organisation and their
long-term IT strategy, Novell claimed.
"Linux is positioned to become the first computing environment to truly
offer the ability to consolidate to a single business platform, from
desktop to server to mainframe," said Lenz.
"Therefore it is vital that IT departments have clearly defined where or
how Linux applies to their organisational IT strategy," he added.
The one-day Linux beginner's workshop is targeted at IT professionals
and will encompass the basics of installing, configuring, and managing a
Linux system, including a standard server implementation, a Linux
desktop environment, and Novell Nterprise Linux Services.
All attendees will receive a Linux starter kit, including Novell SuSE
Linux evaluation software and a detailed student workbook.
The workshops will commence in August, Novell said.
A nominal fee of RM99.00 will be charged to cover manuals, evaluation
software and catering. For further information and to register, go to

Tracey Lee of Novell Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd at (603) 7722-6100.
