You could have saved your pain. RTFM or Google.
Change the sources.list correctly and apt-get dist-upgrade get you going.

What I don't like, though, it will remain a Knoppix with the dreaded 
Konqueror started; will identify itself as Knoppix, etc.
But there are some scripts (google for kano) to remedy this.
