As there was an article on OSNEWS.com a while back on different
packager package different application. For Desktop, what you generally
looking for are people who

1) create an easy to use interface that is consistent
2) Provide new and updated packages in a timely manner
3) clear upgrade path
4) cost effective.
5) reasonable stability.

Seriously though, for desktop, if you are looking for long term support
for Joe User, Xandros, Lycoris, Lindows, JDS might be viable option. of
course the per seat cost is kind of make point #4 not valid. Of the
four I mentioned my favourite is Xandros.

I hate to say this but many distro provide packages that are really
broken with flawed default configuration. A few desktop Linux I tested
require quite a few tweaking to my liking. Particularly Xine, I can
understand why US-based company don't ship a proper DVD player, but why
Xandros and Mandrake is doing the same is beyond me.

For enterprise application, really, it should be cross platform in
today's env. Meaning it should be coded in Java in such way in the
first place instead of some IE-specific code.
