the OSS acronym also means operational support systems as used in the
telco sector. OSS here are the systems which provide auxilliary and
business services to the network systems for a telco and include the
billing systems, the provisioning systems, rating engines, mediation
engines and the like. the term was in use before 1998 when the OSI
started using OSS to mean open source software.
in mainstream ICT however, i'd think that today OSS is more synonymous
with open source software rather than operational support systems.
