[ossig] Anyone interested in doing some tech research?

Hello all,

There is a government research grant proposal in the
works, the details of which will follow shortly. This
is not a real recruitment drive but bear with me.

I've been asked to ask around to see if I can get any
locals (including expats, ahem) who would be
interested in some kernel hacking to support
scientific computing (indeed, possibilities are beyond
that immediate need). When asked, initially, I said "I
don't think there are any locals who are (interested
enough && competent enough && available enough) for
you to do that sort of research here". After more
prodding though, I thought heck, let me ask around.
I'd love to be proven wrong in my initial assessment.
Hence this email.

No commitments right now though, as the proposal is
still not solid. What I'm asking is that, amongst the
lot of us, is there anyone interested in doing this
sort of cutting edge low-level down-and-dirty kernel
hacking? Yes, get paid to hack kernel for a specific
time period (a few years) and advance the state of the
art all the while playing with exotic hardware and
configurations.

This is the technical gist of it:

If you google for it, you'll find that there is quite
a bit of research going on (many teams too) to try and
utilize GPUs (graphics processors and their cards) for
other than 3D graphics. Think about it, these babies
are many times faster at vectors and fp math than your
average P4s. Each graphics card has processor and RAM
on board. Some manufacturers are making PCI-Express
graphics cards. So, the idea of the research is to see
if we can utilize these processors to do scientific
computing with multiple cards in one box. To use the
'marketing hype', "a super computer on your desktop"
would sum up the idea. Due to the relatively advanced
state of MP and DRI in the linux kernel compared to
the BSD ones, it's probably safe to assume that that
is the kernel to be hacked on. Though I could be
wrong.

Some insider info for you:
This research would *probably* utilize Creative's
Wildcat cards. The group, if/when formed would
probably be based in 1 or more local Universities.

Anyone interested and thinks he/she is up to it and
could commit for a few years (starting from 2005/2006
or so), please email me privately.

Cheers.
