I think for the purpose of us understanding a bit more of what you are facing 
and specifically what you think would be helpful. Maybe you should elaborate 
what you want us to help exactly. I have heard that at your organisation, 
people don't like to learn another computing technology.   OSS just whole 
bunch of tools. How you want to use it is up to you.  I guess what we need 
from you is 

1) Would you say your chemist don't know how to use Linux and thereby prevent 
its adoption?
2) Lack of people to maintain the machine ?
3) Lack of programing skills ?

	FYI, when I was cooker mailing list a while back there was talk about 
starting a distro for scientist, not sure how far it went though.
