The scheduler needs a bit of work... perhaps fans of desktop
perfomance (and don't mind getting their hands *slightly* dirty) can
try Dr. Kolivas's scheduler patches:

He updates his stuff very regularly. The only caveat is you've got to
be comfortable patching and compiling kernels.
