Well, most modern distros are also compiled with Pentium 4 extensions on
x86 - so it might be wiser to rebuild them (package wise?) into i586
packages
Trying to push a 486, with 16MB of RAM to the "poorer" will just make
them hate the open source world, imho. Bad impressions it will give them

As I am running on an 800Mhz G3, mostly scaled to 400MHz ;-)
