Re: [ossig] Do we need a local Linux Magazine?

Yes, definitely !!

I am willing to pay RM 10 - RM 20 constantly for a
local Linux magazine. I expect to get some local
content, and read some advertisement from local
vendors.

My most concerning stuff is the LOCAL CONTENT,
technical content and the price (in that order). I
seldom buy Linux magazines from US, UK [Linux
Magazine, Linux Journal]. RM 40 is not too expensive
to me, but after paying RM 40, I can only get some
technical content (which I prefer to read it online, &
print it if I like !! more coverage, faster, free,
newer !!). Their local content as in US, UK is not
applicable (of little value) to me.

My business is built around local market, so I MUST
expect to see LOCAL CONTENT.

I have been reading a Chinese Linux magazine from Hong
Kong for about 2 years. It has extensive coverage on
Linux/ Open Source/ Java related contents from Hong
Kong, China & Taiwan. The magazine is LinuxPilot
http://www.linuxpilot.net/ , initially started as
bi-monthly (HK$ 50, RM 24.50) publication 3 years
back, this year they turned into monthly (HK$ 38, RM
18.60) issues, about 120 pages. I have been buying the
back issues (constant 2 issues back to the latest
publication) at local newstand, at RM 10 (KL), RM
12.20 (Sarawak).

LinuxPilot is a successful story. Now they have some
influencing power on Linux/ Open Source stuff in
Chinese-speaking markets. They have also created
positive impact on encouraging the widespread of local
Linux usage. They have created a stronger Linux
community. They have disseminated Linux/ Open Source
information that the community is hungry for...

Hope this successful story will encourage you to go
further. Don't forget to count me in as a constant
reader/ supporter... ;-)

I think RM 10 - RM 15 with a free CD will attract some
fans, even secondary school kids. If you give out
Fedora Core CD's, they are 4 of them, so people will
buy your 4 issues straight... Malaysian like
freebies... ;-)

We DO need a local Linux Magazine !!
