I'll only recommend Fedora Core 3 or Ubuntu Warty Warthog 4.10 for
something user friendly. Both default to the GNOME desktop, have
HAL/udev/hotplug goodness, run with 2.6 kernels, and are easy to use

>From an installation POV, Ubuntu has customised Debian's installer, its
still text based, and is deemed to be unbreakable (but I've seen it
break, so if its a newbie, be warned). Fedora Core 3 comes with
Anaconda, fully graphical, tends to be very easy to use...

X config tends to be done better in FC-3, only because they have Xorg
rather than the dated XFree86. This will change in Ubuntu Hoary
Hedgehog, due sometime next April

Either way, for desktop use, they both seem relatively ready
