Mandrake is nice.  They have just recently released 10.1 with kernel
2.6/udev/Xorg and the works.  It has an excellect configuration
utility and hardware detection.  Very user friendly for newbies.

Packaging is done with urpm (enhanced version of rpm) which works very
similar to apt in the Debian world.

If you're looking into LiveCD - install type I'd suggest Mepis Linux. 
It has good hardware detection as well as good collection of default
software.  There is also a LiveCD based on Mandrake, PCLinuxOS, which
also excellent in package selection and eye-candy but its still a beta
software.
