Re: [myoss] Re: [ossig] What is OSC CLub?

Well, we can't expect the colleges/universities to make such a sudden change on the syllabus. It's not going to happen when m$ is frequently donating $ into education sector, but... some institutions are already teaching open source as one of their sub subjects. That's a good sign.

Where students interest is concern... other than "A"cing their exams, we are going to move the club to be fun/social/community kind of thing. $ or Rewards will be pump in to motivate the students to "try" open source. We have monthly activities and mega activities coming up.

I've got to agree to u that to change people's mindset for not using m$ is not easy, but at least awareness on open source must be there. We have done some surveys, it is not the issue of people not using it, but more like people not even know such things exists. You will be shocked to see final year IT students of X institutes, who doesn't even know what is Linux / Open Office about. I'm not referring to 1 or 2 students, but like a whole intake. Imagine how they are brought up.

Things will change, but requires time and acceptance. Just gotta give it a try and persevere...

but unless they (or someone else) lobbies their colleges/universities to
stop using product based teaching syllabi and starting more OSS Labs (for
academic purposes), nothing will change. a large majority of malaysian
students care only about aceing their exams and how much they can get paid
as an employee.
