imho, why not have many small workshops in one or two mega events ?
workshops are more effective in getting information across but mega
events have higher visibility (and commercial sponsorships).

for example look at pc fair. there are so many activities and things
going on. obviously, fosscon will not have the same type of buying
public but it is possible to have a lot of side-shows and workshops,
etc. attendance / registration at the side shows and workshop can be
used as an initial measure of success, as well as leads for other things.
