There are two ways of looking at this. A developer conference may not 
help generate a new pool of developers for existing or new foss 
projects, but it can encourage existing developers to use foss dev 
tools. For example, using PHP + WACT or Zope instead of .NET, using 
SWT+Eclipse for Java development instead of any of the existing 
proprietary IDE platforms, using JBoss for deployment instead of the 
alternatives, using Mono instead of .NET etc.

Well yeah, that call was truly elite :) But more importantly, the 
decision to foss in house code has seen significant returns. Our code 
now works correctly on a larger number of platforms  and environments 
than it did before, which increases the value of the code and our 
ability to sell it to prospective clients.
