Re: [ossig] Best printer support for Linux/FreeBSD

I have deployed several brand in my network and here are my experience

Brother,

Most brother printer have grest compatibility with Linux, I am using a HL5150,
works great, (Hooked up with a print server via LPD)

Cannon

Stay away from cannon, almost all the MFC type have poor compatibility with
Linux and of thouse where there is a dirver, resolution and print quality are
bad. My experience are with MFC14** and BJC-3000, both bad. Also have
problem with OSX.

Epson
I have a number of epson and all of them seems to work great with the right
resolution, all of them hooked up with a printserver,

Stylus Photo 895DC, C1900, C63, CX5300 are the one I tired all works
(Hooked up with a print server via LPD)

HP

No much complaint except the only MFC printer I tried works poorly when hookup
to a print server. (C1100)

C1100, Laserjet 6L

Kyocera

Had one several years ago, no problem, cannot remember the exact model, but
think it was a FS-1700.
(Hooked up with a print server via LPD)

Ricoh
In general, suppose to work with the postscript mode and ppd file supplied.
However, when in a network env. large PDF tend not to print out properly.
This is true for the AP2000 and Aficio 350 I have in my office. Aficio 350 is
a photocopy machine tht print at 30ppm. Both printer sometimes hang when
large file is sent to this printer.

Samsung,

had some MP1710, works great as a desktop attached printer, never tried
networked it.

Xerox,

I had one and it turns out it was made by Samsung and a samsung driver would
make it work. Can't remember the model name but was one of the low end model.
Same driver don't work on OSX ś cups for some very strange reason.

In general checking www.linuxprinting.org however, the list is a little old
and some newer printer are not listed. Also some printer are Asian/Europe
model only which may not shows up. My advice is best stick with Epson or
some brand with good linux compatibility record. Stay away from those mark as
work öccationally. the site may sometimes be too liberal with some printer,
Ricoh AP2000 is indicated as a printer that works there but in reality it
doesnt seems to work when come to specific situation.

Epson also has a joint venture called epson-kowa or something like that that
publish various linux driver.

Hope this helps.
