You can get a job as an open source developer at any time ;) You'd
just be *unpaid*... hehe...

But seriously, don't wait... if there's an OSS project you like, give
them a hand. It's good experience, and helps when you finally get that
paid job. It doesn't necessarily have to be development help, you can
do stuff like documentation too.

The popular OSS tools such as the Linux kernel, Apache, PHP, etc. are
done in either C or C++, so knowledge of those languages is very
important if you want to help out with a popular project.
