hmm ... you better tell us what *nix did that !

in fact you can go to any directory as root and type : 
rm -rf . 
or
rm -rf ..
... now apart from some messages ... nothing should happen.

...no need to be paranoid ... rm -rf can be your friend ...   ;-)
