Can't speak for the rest of the industry, only for my own company[1]. If
you want a job developing on open source systems, the requirements
aren't that incredibly different from a normal developer. The only
different requirements are that you are familiar with a different subset
of technology than the standard C#, VB or Java hacker.
However, if you want to become a real open source developer, that's a
totally different matter. An interesting read is ESR's "How To Become a
Hacker", though don't take it as gospel. url:

Another fascinating read, though this is more related to mindset for
software engineering than open source, is the programmers stone and

Doubt any real stats exist. I'm also based in China at the moment, so
can't really say for sure. But every decent open source person I know,
both in Malaysia and China, is fully employed and not looking to
move[2]. The vast majority are programmers and developers but there are
security specialists, sysadmins, etc.
