Yes, hsqldb was chosen over libmysql - it was a dark day when said
decision came, alas, we stand behind it
Keeping in mind that MySQL AB wanted to change the license for libmysql
for OOo's use...

Use an open source JRE

OOo is already GTK+ified (as well as Qt-ified, and Windows-ified) these
days, thanks to the Native Widget Framework
If someone wants to rewrite it in a saner language like C, by all means,
go ahead :) I'd actually prefer to hack on that...
