Interesting post you brought up, me having to dig thru archives of so-
ooo list (I wish the archives were publically available)
This pretty much sums up the choice:

Remember though that using hsqldb (an embedded java-based db), doesn't
mean your current DB access to mysql/postgres/etc... will be hampered.
It just means that now without a DB server (or a spreadsheet or
plaintext files) one can now have a _relational_ database for free
A little relevant snippet of an email:

working with the database of your choice, in pretty much the same way as
it's possible in OOo 1.x. The most notable difference to the user is
that you have a dedicated application now, as opposed to the "View|Data
