[ossig] Many Thanks! - a little late!
Hi All,
A couple of months ago I posted to the list looking for a Linux posting in Malaysia. I want to thank all the folks who got back to me with suggestions
and pointers to great companies and some very interesting government related programs. I was also tempted by at least two of the many business/startup
propositions - when in KL I was excited to see Linux moving forward - and my discussions with list members confirmed that assessment.
While the choice was tough - I was offered a posting as the Chief Technology Officer for the Free Standards Group. It seemed like the best way to make
good things happen in Linux, though sadly - I won't be able to live in KL! :( But I want to say thanks to my friends on the list who offered me their
time and advice. As my girlfriend lives and works in KL - I guess I'll continue to rack up those frequent flier miles...
For some background, the Free Standards Group is a non-profit industry consortium (supported by all the major Linux distributions, OEM's and ISV's)
who's primary mission is to grow the use and acceptance of Open Source technologies through standards. We are responsible for all aspects of the Linux
Standards Base (LSB), the Linux Internationalization Initiative (double byte character support in Linux) and the File System Hirearchy standard. Here in
the US, most major application vendors are demanding that applications be LSB specification compliant. For organizations in Malaysia that do business
across regions (and internationally) - the ability to write to a single standard and easily deploy your applications across differing geography,
hardware architectures and distributons is a key component in reducing cost.
I find the MNCC mailing list to be one of the better Linux user discussion lists - and if there is anything I can do in terms of being helpful to your
businesses and organizations, or questions about the LSB; please drop me a note.
Thanks, Art...
